HECTOR – A good-practice example of proactive regional action

A good-practice example for synergies between the Interreg North-West Europe Programme and Horizon 2020 are the following projects: HECTOR (Hydrogen Waste Collection Vehicles in North West Europe) and JIVE (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe).

The aim of the Interreg project HECTOR is to foster the introduction in the near future of a zero-emission drive technology in commercial vehicle fleets in the waste management sector, which so far have run on conventional fuels. The innovative approaches to fuel cell and hydrogen technology for municipal waste management developed within the HECTOR project have been incorporated in the JIVE project funded under Horizon 2020, in which new and pioneering technologies for the bus sector are being developed and tested. Two local service providers, Wirtschaftsbetriebe Duisburg and Abfallentsorgungs-Gesellschaft Ruhrgebiet mbH (AGR), are involved as project partners of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The hydrogen-powered AGR H2 truck has been in operation since May 2022 and is already making an effective contribution to the decarbonisation of road transport beyond the region.
